It wasn’t until I actually heard a .flac recording, that I could appreciate how sweet all the Beatle albums could sound. ( Actually my 1st taste of perfection was when I still had a good turntable with a $400 Signet cartridge running into my NAD 3240PE amp & Energy Reference 22 speakers ( used by the CBC-Canadian Broadcasting Co. ) I was able to listen to the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Beatle’s Black Box -vinyl RULES!!!! I don’t care what anyone says, vinyl is absolutely ( 2nd to listening to the original master tape in a studio ) the best recording I ever heard of the Beatles. All the warmth, the presence ; the imaging ; everything sounded so sweet. And what flipped me out is that the best album out of all 13 is, believe it or not, Please Please Me. They explain that the recording tape used in 1963 used larger iron ferrite particles than the tape used today , so, the retention of sound on the older tapes must be different. To get the best Beatles recordings ever, do a Google search & find ” torrent ” sites where the albums can be down loaded. I use an Apple iMac , so I used a program called “Azureus ” and depending on the speed of your system it may take overnight to download the whole file. ( we’re talking 2-4 GB size files ). Then, unless you have a program to play the “.flac” files, I found a program called VLC that will play .flac files. You then need a program called xAct to convert the .flac files to “.aiff ” files, ( the same codex they use for the CD’s they sell in the store ) so you can use iTunes to burn a backup copy and if you want, iTunes will also convert the “.aiff” to MP3 files so they don’t use up your whole iPod hard drive. Let me say right out front, I’m no pirate. I’ve purchased all the Beatles albums 3-4 times, & I’m not looking to sell the albums ; in this particular instance, money is not the issue. I’m an audio-videophile & I’m looking for the best possible sound possible that’s available. Beatle freaks out there-email me so we can swap stories. Maybe we have something we could trade some studio outtakes or home recordings or whatever.
